Población introducida de tritón alpino (Mesotriton alpestris) en el Prepirineo catalán

Published in , 2015

Unexpectedly High Levels of Cryptic Diversity Uncovered by a Complete DNA Barcoding of Reptiles of the Socotra Archipelago

Published in , 2016

Few DNA barcoding studies of squamate reptiles have been conducted. Due to the significance of the Socotra Archipelago (a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site and a biodiversity hotspot) and the conservation interest of its reptile fauna (94% endemics), we performed the most comprehensive DNA barcoding study …

Cryptic within cryptic: genetics, morphometrics, and bioacoustics delimitate a new species of Eleutherodactylus (Anura: Eleutherodactylidae) from Eastern Cuba

Published in , 2017

Due to extreme morphological similarities some species remain undetected to the eyes of taxonomists and when discovered, often by the application of more refined techniques or increased sampling effort, are termed cryptic species. Among animals, such taxonomic discoveries are more frequent in nocturnal taxa, like arthropods and amphibians, which often rely on chemical or acoustic cues for communication and provide scarce information to our visually-oriented brain (Bickford, et al., 2006). The definition of a species as cryptic is to certain degree subjective, i.e., subtle morphological differences might be obvious to specialists but remain undetected by untrained observers. Yet, there is little doubt that a large number of truly cryptic species exist, and amphibians are an animal group where this phenomenon has become obvious in the past decades …

Another record or a new taxon? A candidate species of Chalcides Laurenti, 1768, in North Africa (Squamata: Sauria: Scincidae)

Published in , 2017

The genus Chalcides comprises about 30 species of scincid lizards mainly distributed across north Africa, its taxonomic status and distribution as described in the literature has fluctuated in recent years. In May 2014, the authors found a skink of the Chalcides type in Théniet el Had national Park (Algeria) initially classified as Chalcides mertensi KLAUSEWITZ, 1954, based on its morphological similarity and distribution. A region of 396-bp of the cytochrome b mitochondrial gene was sequenced …

A practical guide to build de-novo assemblies for single tissues of non-model organisms: the example of a Neotropical frog

Published in , 2017

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is a very valuable resource to understand the evo- lutionary history of poorly known species. However, in organisms with large genomes, as most amphibians, WGS is still excessively challenging and transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) represents a cost-effective tool to explore genome-wide variability. Non- model organisms do not usually have a reference genome and the transcriptome must be assembled de-novo. We used RNA-seq to obtain the transcriptomic profile for Oreobates cruralis, a poorly known South American direct-developing frog …

The genomic basis of adaptation to high-altitude habitats in the eastern honey bee (Apis cerana)

Published in , 2018

The eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) is of central importance for agriculture in Asia. It has adapted to a wide variety of environmental conditions across its native range in southern and eastern Asia, which includes high-altitude regions. eastern honey bees inhabiting mountains differ morphologically from neighbouring lowland populations and may also exhibit differences in physiology and behaviour. We compared the genomes of 60 eastern honey bees collected from high and low altitudes in …

Digest: Resolving phylogenomic conflicts in characiform fishes

Published in , 2019

How can taxonomists best resolve the challenge of curating and analyzing large phylogenomic datasets that produce incongruent but highly supported topologies? Betancur-R et al. used a recently established hypothesis-testing procedure on a large dataset of genes and species to study the evolutionary relationships of characiform fishes …

Phylogenomics and evolutionary history of Oreobates (Anura: Craugastoridae) Neotropical frogs along elevational gradients

Published in , 2021

Mountain ranges offer opportunities for understanding how species evolved and diversified across different environmental conditions. Neotropical frogs of the genus Oreobates are adapted to highland and lowland habitats along the Andes, but many aspects of their evolution remain unknown. We studied their evolutionary history using ~18,000 exons enriched by targeted sequence-capture …
